A Christmas Fair, a concert that will bring together 200 small singers from schools in Portimão, a visit by Santa Claus and his assistants and the Disney in Concert show, at Portimão Arena, and the traditional Christmas lights are some of the suggestions of the Portimão Chamber for celebrate this festive season.
From the 16th to the 31st of December, Alameda da Praça da República will host a Christmas Fair, a novelty in relation to previous years, where 20 exhibitors of handicraft, wood and gastronomy will gather and where various initiatives will be promoted.
One of them is the concert that will be performed by two hundred students from the Group of Schools Eng. Nuno Mergulhão, who will interpret Christmas songs of various nationalities. The choir, composed of students from pre-school to 2nd cycle, is directed by Professor Francisco Balancho. The arrival of Santa Claus with his elves (on the 16th, 11:30 am) and the daily presence of this legendary figure is another of the fair's attractions.
"This fair will transform the city's historic artery into a true Christmas village and a true showcase of traditional and modern handicrafts, cheeses, sausages, liqueurs and many other delicacies from the most diverse regions of the country and even abroad", believes the Chamber of Portimao.
The Christmas spirit in Portimão will not be confined to the Fair and will spread throughout the county, through the typical lighting of the period.
This year, according to the municipality, there is something new, compared to 2015, «the lighting in the main streets of the heart of Portimão, along with traditional shops».
Thus, the Municipality of Portimão (building facade), TEMPO – Municipal Theater of Portimão (building facade), the Ponte Velha de Portimão, the three welcoming porticoes (Alvor, Mexilhoeira Grande and Portimão) will be illuminated. ) and Rua do Comércio (Rua Vasco da Gama to Infante D. Henrique, intersection of Rua do Comércio with Rua da Hortinha and Rua Direita and Rua Damião Luís Faria e Castro).
A giant 1-metre Christmas Tree will also be installed in Largo 13º de Maio. «The city will also be contemplated with lighting in about 30 trees», added the Portimão Chamber.
Another high point of the vast program set up by the municipality will take place on Saturday. At 21 pm, Portimão Arena will host the show «Disney in Concert – magical music from the movies», performed by the Portuguese orchestra Lisbon Film Orchestra, conducted by conductor Nuno de Sá, and which brings together themes from Disney films.
The Christmas program also includes three exhibitions until 6 January: the open-air display of the Nativity scene in full size, in Largo da Mó, the exhibition of Nativity scenes "Na Casa da Luz", in the Nobre hall of the Parish Council Portimão, and the Christmas Crib 2016, as part of the celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the Firefighters of Portimão, at the Vehicle Park of the Portimão Fire Station Headquarters.
