The Algarve Regional Council for Innovation (CIRA) has already started to monitor the Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3) for the region. The first meeting of this consultative body, which brings together representatives of public, business and academic entities, took place on December 16, at the Regional Coordination and Development Commission of the Algarve.

The region's Intelligent Specialization Strategy was created under the contractualization of the Algarve 2020 Operational Program and was one of the conditions for accessing the European Union Structural Funds in the 2014/2020 financing period.

«The RIS3 Algarve is a dynamic process that involves the participation of regional partners, companies, technology producers, entities of the scientific and technological system, universities, business associations, national entities for planning and management of R&I policies and inter-municipal entities». framed the Algarve CCDR.

At last week's meeting, attended by 70 partners, a first approach was made to some structuring projects that RIS3 foresees, namely the «Smart Algarve Region», the Technological Pole, the Center for Advanced Studies for Innovation in Tourism and the opportunities that the region has in the energy area.

Among the entities that intervened are the business associations AHETA and Enercoutim, the CCMAR research center, the CGTP trade union center and AMAL, which gives an idea of the diversity of the members of this advisory board.

And it is through the involvement of different regional actors that the success of this strategy passes, in the view of the president of the CCDR of the Algarve.

«The development of the Algarve Smart Region should stimulate the exploration of new opportunities for regional development in the coming years, since, as a macro entity, it favors the digitization and integration of sectorial projects such as Smart Cities, Smart Tourist Destinations or Smart Energy Networks, creating a development dynamic more directed towards the knowledge society», considered Francisco Serra, during the meeting.
