The winner will receive €5 and a commemorative medal from the cork company Pelcor.

The decision to award this award to José Silva Louro was announced on 10 October, as reported by the Sul Informação. 

The jury included Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, Ana Paula Amendoeira, regional director of Culture of the Alentejo, António Branco, rector of the University of Algarve (UAlg), Idálio Revez, journalist for «Público», José Carlos Barros, landscape architect and congressman, Lídia Jorge, writer, Mirian Tavares, director of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at UAlg, Natividade Monteiro, professor and researcher, and Paulo Cunha, professor of music, who evaluated the eight applications submitted this year.

This Regional Award «Maria Veleda» is an initiative of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, which wants to «highlight and recognize the cultural activity of Algarve personalities, protagonists of particularly relevant and innovative interventions in the Region».

The initiative also wants to make a contribution to the measure «Women Creators of Culture», advocated in the V National Plan for Gender Equality, Citizenship and Non-Discrimination, taking place in the period 2014-2017.

Maria Veleda, pseudonym of Maria Carolina Frederico Crispim, was a fighter for the education of children and for women's rights, having been born in Faro, in 1871. She was also a primary school teacher and a pioneer in the struggle for the ideals of justice, freedom, equality and democracy.

The decision to award the prize to José Silva Louro was unanimous at the time, «for recognizing that, in his life course, the principles of gender equality and opportunities, as well as the exercise of active citizenship are present in his activity of pedagogue and citizen, with active civic and cultural participation in the Algarve, giving a clear response to the criteria underlying the creation of this distinction», explains the Regional Directorate of Culture.

Professor José Silva Louro was in the foundation of the university theater group SIN-CERA, of the Companhia de Teatro do Algarve and in the formation of the theater group Al-Masrah, having also been a programmer at Teatro Lethes until 2008.

The award ceremony will be attended by the Secretary of State for Culture Miguel Honrado, the President of the Chamber of Faro Rogério Bacalhau, from the regional director of Culture Alexandra Gonçalves, as well as all the elements that made up the jury. It also has the support of ACTA – The Algarve Theater Company.
