The “Maria Veleda”|2016 Regional Award was unanimously awarded to José Luís Leite da Silva Louro, an application presented by Club Farense, has just announced the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, promoter of the award.
The jury decided to distinguish Professor José Louro, recognizing that «his life path, as well as his civic and cultural participation are a relevant testimony that fully meets the criteria and spirit underlying this distinction», reveals the Regional Director .
His action and intervention in education, but also in youth and associations, was a precursor of new cultural practices in the Algarve, having been involved in the creation of the university theater group SIN-CERA, in the foundation of the Algarve Theater Company and in the formation of the Al-Masrah theater group.
In addition to being an «indisputable pedagogue and a lover and expert connoisseur of Pessoa's poetry», he assumed the role of programmer at Teatro Lethes and, later, at Teatro Municipal de Faro, until 2008.
«It mobilized young people and marked the history of theater in the Algarve, becoming an unquestionable reference for education through art in the region», he stresses.
In relation to the principles of gender equality and opportunities, as well as the exercise of active citizenship, he was responsible, among other activities, for staging the play Dollhouse, by the playwright Henrik Ibsen, from 1879, an iconic text in the struggle for the emancipation of women.
The jury, consisting of Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, who chaired the meeting, Ana Paula Amendoeira, regional director of Culture of Alentejo, António Branco, rector of the University of Algarve (UALg), Idálio Revez, journalist of « Público», José Carlos Barros, landscape architect, Lídia Jorge, writer, Mirian Tavares, director of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at UAlg., Natividade Monteiro, professor and researcher, and Paulo Cunha, music professor, met in the past October 10th, Monday, to evaluate the eight applications received.
The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve also congratulates the other candidates, for the projects and actions that each one has carried out and that have greatly contributed to the cultural development of the Algarve region.
The creation of this Award, in 2014, by that body, intends to recognize the cultural and civic path of personalities who have revealed themselves as protagonists of particularly relevant and innovative interventions in the region, as well as being part of the response to the measures. foreseen in the program “Women creators of culture”, recommended in the V National Plan for Gender Equality, Citizenship and Non-Discrimination, taking place in the period 2014-2017.
The award, scheduled for the month of December on a space and day to be announced shortly, has a donation of 5.000 euros and a commemorative medal, produced by the cork company Pelcor, which, since the beginning, has been associated with the «Maria Regional Award Sails'.
«In this way, the Algarve provides its public recognition to José Louro, a great personality of the Algarve's culture, so this is a moment of celebration for the Culture of the region», concludes the Regional Directorate.
Two years ago, in its first edition, the Maria Veleda Regional Award was awarded the Daisy Tengarrinha.
