news-first-vitrectomyAt the beginning of the month, the Hospital Particular de Alvor performed the first vitrectomy for retinal detachment. This was the first time that an intervention of this type was carried out in a hospital belonging to the Hospital Particular Group.

According to the group, the operation was performed on a Dutch patient who "reported feeling very satisfied and has returned to her country."

On the day the woman sought permanent care, «the lesion had already evolved within 15 days, and it was possible to resolve the situation in less than 24 hours», adds the Grupo Hospital Particular, which states that «retinal detachments if not treated in a timely manner, they can produce irreparable blindness».

The surgery was performed using ocular microsurgery techniques and consisted of “the removal of the vitreous gel from the posterior segment, followed by aspiration of the subretinal fluid that kept the layers of the retina separate. Finally, the repair of the tear that originally caused the retinal detachment was performed, using an endolaser».

The Hospital Particular says, at the moment, it has «the best technology in the Algarve in terms of surgery of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, as well as complementary exams».
