I transit portimaoMost people in the Algarve regularly travel in their own car, to the detriment of public transport, and the phenomenon has worsened in the last 10 years. This is one of the conclusions reached after the first diagnosis of mobility in the Algarve, made within the scope of the VAMUS sustainable mobility project, whose results will be presented on Wednesday, from 9:30 am, at the Salão Nobre da Câmara de Albufeira.

The VAMUS – Sustainable Urban Mobility Project of the Algarve, was launched in July by AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community and brings together more than 50 partners, among which the main transport operators in the region. The main objective of the project is to make the Algarve a more sustainable region, in terms of transport, arranging solutions so that the population increasingly chooses to use public transport or non-polluting means when traveling within the Algarve.

The first concrete action carried out under this project was the launch of PAMUS – Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for the Algarve, whose first results will be released on Wednesday. And the conclusions reached confirmed that the car is the transport of choice for the Algarve.

«Only in the central area (corresponding to the municipalities of Albufeira, Loulé, Faro, São Brás de Alportel, Olhão and Tavira), which concentrates the largest population in the Algarve, the growth of individual transport during that period exceeded 38%, while collective road transport registered a drop of around 23% of its users. Also lost share, both in this area and to windward and leeward, pedestrian and bicycle and motorcycle movements. Only the train saw the share of users grow (+13,9%)», revealed AMAL.

The technicians who made this diagnosis of mobility in the region will be present and reveal the conclusions reached, being later available for clarification, in the debate period that will follow

The session will also count with the presence of Eduardo Feio, president of the Mobility and Transport Institute, Jorge Botelho, president of AMAL, and the mayor of Albufeira Carlos Silva e Sousa.
