The arch located on the side of the João de Deus House-Museum, in São Bartolomeu de Messines, and which gives access to the second floor of the building, was intervened by the Conservation and Restoration Service of the Municipality of Silves, according to information given today, 25th of October, by the local authority.

This structure, which has a plastered arch, covered in plaster and decorated with a painting technique imitating marble (“marbled”), dates back to 1997 and, according to the Municipality of Silves, «has several conservation problems in terms of the existence of gaps and risk of detachment at the level of the preparation layer and polychrome layer (painting), presence of salts and surface dirt».

After the diagnosis, the restoration team realized that there was already a previous restoration, based on a layer of cement. "This fact prevented the municipality's restoration and conservation techniques from verifying the quality of the oldest layer, having opted not to lift the restoration layer and choosing a minimal intervention methodology, which respected the authenticity and course of the work." adds the Chamber of Silves.

Thus, chemical and mechanical cleaning was carried out, as well as desalination, fillings at the level of the preparation layer, chromatic reintegration and application of the protective layer.

This work, says the municipality of Silvense, comes "following others" of the municipality. «It should be noted that just this week we began the restoration work on the stucco work on the dome of the Paços do Concelho building», says the mayor of Silves Rosa Palma.

"We have been carrying out various works, such as the recovery of shutters, window frames, the main door of the building and the clock, among others, as we understand that it is necessary to conserve what has a relevant heritage and historical value for the county." explains the mayor.

«We have a Service of Conservation and Restoration with excellent professionals, whose action has allowed many valuable assets to be safeguarded and it is also necessary to value this work», he concludes.

These, the Silvense local authority points out, «are conservation and restoration works, which follow the most recent regulations prescribed for this activity, that is, the removal of old restorations (an integral part of the work/piece's history) is always considered. put at risk what is being intervened».
