School Pavilion Afonso III_1They started at the end of June and wanted to be finished in time for the beginning of the school year, but the works in the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo da Escola EB 2,3 Afonso III, in Faro, they only end "at the end of October", he told the Sul Informação the president of the Chamber of Rogério Bacalhau.

In practice, this means that students of this educational establishment they will have to wait at least another month and a half before they can resume classes at the pavilion.

«The deadline for completion of the work is the end of October. We had asked for it to be faster, but the contractors had a problem with removing the old pavilion floor. But they have been working and we are following them», assured Rogério Bacalhau.

This will have been the main cause for the lack of completion of the work in the desired time. The requalification of the Afonso III pavilion started at the end of June, shortly after the start of the Summer Vacation, and it was wanted to be ready before returning to school. In the announcement he made of the beginning of the works, more than two months ago, the Chamber of Faro guarantee that these would be, "surely, completed by the restart of the 2016/17 school year, also as scheduled".

The program ended up not being fulfilled and the more than 600 Afonso III students will start the year without being able to take classes in this sports equipment. The alternative will be the existing outdoor fields in the school.

«The school knows this and will continue to use the space outside, it already has an alternative. During this month and a half, Afonso III's sporting activity will have to adapt to the existing space. It will not be ideal, but I hope that everything is resolved before the end of October», according to Rogério Bacalhau.

The many clubs and associations that use the same pavilion, outside school hours, will not be affected, bearing in mind that «alternatives have been found in the meantime and have all been distributed to other spaces in the municipality».

At night, there are teams of different modalities using the Afonso III pavilion, which mobilize “thousands of people”.

The intervention, budgeted at 150 thousand euros, aims to install a «new and more modern pavilion floor, to replace the current one, very used and in poor condition» and the requalification of the changing rooms, «adapting them to the demands of the days of today".
