The cockle is the main dish of the Festival dedicated to this bivalve, which takes place on September 10th and 11th at the Polidesportivo de Figueira, in Portimão.
Cockle pasta, cockle rice, cockle porridge, cockle patties and, of course, natural cockles are some of the tasting proposals.
The festival venue has a capacity for around 400 seats and around two tons of cockles will be prepared to delight more than four thousand people looking for one of the most genuine and flavorful dishes of the regional cuisine.
This bivalve traditionally prepared in a simple way appears at this event in the most diverse forms, always based on a little oil, a bunch of parsley or coriander and a clove of garlic.
Local music will provide entertainment for everyone to dance, and on the first day includes performances by the Musical Duo “Victor e Bruno” and the musical show with Mena, while on the following day, after the performance of accordionist Vera Lúcia, the Traditional music will be in charge of Toy, who promises to delight the audience.
This two-day festival offers the opportunity to experience a true typical festival, enriched by the community and visitors and by the traditional Algarve cuisine.
Figueira has been organizing the Cockle Festival for 14 consecutive years, in honor of the special place that this shellfish has in its heart, as the collection of cockles in the Ria de Alvor dates back to ancient times, and this business has supported many local families in ancient times.
The event will take place between 19:00 pm and 01:00 am and entry continues to cost 3 euros, including a cockle saucer, organized by Sociedade Recreativa Figueirense, with the support of the Municipality of Portimão and the Parish Council of Mexilhoeira Grande.
