Degraded Youth Park_01 (Custom)The Coalition «Servir Portimão» (CDS-PP/MPT/PPM), the main opposition force in the city's Chamber, denounces that, after finishing the intervention in the Youth Park, after a public tender, where 94 thousand euros were spent, « the equipment for the enjoyment of the population and users remains unusable or in absolutely degrading conditions, typical of any Third World country».

The coalition led by councilor José Pedro Caçorino adds that the intervention “came about repairing and replacing fences, replacing curbs, painting support structures (such as the bar, the guardhouse, the headquarters of the Bicross Club) and recovery of benches».

But he left out «a general and thorough cleaning of the park, the greening of green areas, the cleaning of the existing lake, the creation of safety conditions for users (for example, the props for closing the lids of the manholes), repairing skating rinks or even rehabilitating public toilets'.

José Pedro Caçorino adds that the mayor, socialist Isilda Gomes, at an extraordinary meeting on 20 July, in response to a criticism from the councilor of “Servir Portimão”, “recognized the total ineffectiveness of the intervention carried out and (amaze! ) said that the technician who identified the problems and deficiencies of the Youth Park, which should have been included in the specifications that served as the basis for the aforementioned tender procedure, had to be held accountable».

The opposition coalition repudiates "this way of spending Portimão's money", which they accuse of serving only to "promote symbolic works, which, in addition to solving nothing, continue to be a drain on the scarce financial resources of the Portimão City Council" .

"Servir Portimão", in a statement signed by its leader José Pedro Caçorino, says it still does not accept that the president of the Chamber Isilda Gomes "continues to jettison responsibilities, by promoting a real hunt for a hypothetical scapegoat of the inefficiency of the Permanent Executive who says to drive".

"Or the President assumes all of her responsibilities for the constant failures and inefficiencies of her political team, as happened in this specific case, or it is better to say clearly to Portimonenses and to all employees of the Municipality of Portimão that she only exercises the mandate to gather the laurels of the propaganda actions that it manages to make known in the public opinion», criticizes the coalition.

“As much as Mrs. President Isilda Gomes affirms that Portimão came out of the red, the truth is that reality demonstrates and will continue to demonstrate that such advertisements are manifestly exaggerated”, concludes “Servir Portimão”.

O Sul Informação spoke with councilwoman Ana Fazenda, responsible for the Sports department, who announced that "the executive is going to remove the wooden ramps, which in fact are very degraded and are a danger to young people."

"We don't want any accident to happen there, on these ramps that were installed in 2010 by a German company that paid for the intervention, thus helping the Bicross Club to have ramps for an international BMX tournament that then took place at the Youth Park", said the councilor.

Ana Fazenda pointed out that the Portimão Council «has already spent a lot of money there on the most urgent, structural works, including fixing the wooden stairs and benches, for example, but we are aware that the work must continue» .

"But, as is public knowledge, the Chamber has little money and has other more urgent priorities, namely in the social area, so we have to manage the money as best as possible," he added.

«To replace the ramps, we are looking for sponsors that will allow us to carry out this intervention without spending a penny of the Municipality's money». “We realized that young people and the Bicross Club need ramps, so we are trying to solve the problem”, he guaranteed.

Another guarantee that councilwoman Ana Fazenda left is that the ramps, which in the past led to complaints from neighboring residents of the Youth Park, due to the noise, will now be “placed in another space within the park, so as not to disturb anyone”.
