Castro Marim City CouncilThe Castro Marim City Council today canceled the fireworks program of two of its biggest cultural events – Festivals in Honor of Our Lady of the Martyrs and Medieval Days – to help the population of Madeira, affected by the scourge of fires.

The financial amount will then be channeled to fund the reconstruction and recovery of infrastructure and economic and social activities affected by the fires that have raged since Monday on the island.

“Given the dramatic situation we have witnessed in Madeira, we have a responsibility to support these populations in whatever way we can,” said the mayor of Castro Marim.

“The fires are breaking out all over the country and, unfortunately, they have marked our summers in the worst way. It was important that the defense of the forest was considered with seriousness and priority and that, in addition, those responsible for these calamities did not go unpunished”, added Francisco Amaral, also thanking the firefighters who have been fighting the fires to the point of exhaustion.

The fires in Madeira started on Monday and confirmed three deaths, two serious injuries, about a thousand displaced people and evacuations from two hospitals, nursing homes and some hotels, as well as dozens of burned houses and businesses.

The Castro Marim City Council is grateful for the understanding of the company Algarpirotecnia, which abdicated the services already contracted.
