3D printed DNA lampInventions in areas such as 3D printing, robotics, electronics, digital manufacturing, art, science and technology will be presented at the «Algarve Maker Show» event, which will be hosted by the Portimão Riverside Zone tomorrow, Saturday.

The event can be visited between 14:00 and 19:00 tomorrow, in the area next to the bandstand. You makers Algarvians present will exhibit their projects and share their creation process with visitors.

«Some of the projects that will be on display have already been awarded in international competitions and in the two previous editions of Lisbon Maker Fair, which will take place again this year on the 25th and 26th of June, at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento in Lisbon”, according to the Câmara de Portimão, which organizes the initiative in partnership with eLab Hackerspace.

The Algarve Maker Show is one of more than 450 events taking place in cities in 28 European countries within the scope of the European Maker Week, an initiative of the European Commission and Startup Europe, which aims to promote this movement among the population, «in a celebration of makers (“doers”) and innovation across Europe'.

To achieve this goal, in addition to the exhibition of works, the Portimão Chamber will promote a gathering on the topic, which will take place between 16:30 pm and 18:00 pm at the Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes. It will be attended by Mário Saleiro and Fernando Cánovas, awarded in the last edition of the Lisbon Maker Faire with the distinction «Maker of Merit».

Mário Saleiro will address the theme «The maker movement in the world, in Portugal and in the Algarve» and talk about the origin of the movement, who are these “makers”, what they do and why. It will also analyze this trend in the world, in Portugal and in the Algarve, «a region with unique characteristics, where this community grows from day to day».

The researcher from Portimo has a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Algarve and is one of the founders and current directors of eLab Hackerspace, a community laboratory for prototyping, digital fabrication and knowledge sharing, based on the Gambelas Business Campus. He is also one of the Lisbon Maker Faire curators and author of the blog The BiT Bang Theory .

Veterinarian Fernando Cánovas is not Portuguese, nor did he even graduate in Portugal, but chose the Algarve, more precisely the Marine Science Centre, to carry out his professional activity.

At the get-together, you will «talk about your path as maker in an attempt to create a laboratory consisting only of "Open Hardware" equipment and "Open Source" software, which led a veterinarian to tinker with electronics and 3D printing, demystifying the idea that to be a "doer" it is necessary to be trained in technological areas such as electronics, information technology or mechanics'.

The movement maker it is currently expanding all over the world and is often called “The New Industrial Revolution”, as it is the transfer of the capacity for creation, innovation and production of large companies to the general population.

"You makers they are individuals who take advantage of their creativity, their technical knowledge and new digital manufacturing technologies (3D printing, CNC machining, others) to innovate, creating innovative solutions that have been changing the world as we know it. In addition to this entire process of creation and innovation, they also have another very important characteristic: the willingness and willingness to share knowledge, processes and even tools for creating communities», summarized the Câmara de Portimão.

From this creative dynamic, many companies have been born all over the world, namely in the Algarve.
