afternoon_arabe_cartaz-PT.jpg-smallA guided tour of Rîbat da Arrifana, a concert with Eduardo Ramos at Aljezur Castle, Arab snacks and a film screening, in collaboration with Tertúlia, within the scope of the “Conversas sobre Cinema” project, are the activities planned for the Arab Afternoon, which will take place on Sunday, June 26, in Aljezur.

The aim is to raise funds to help Alwan Kindergarten, a small school located in Idlib, Syria (86 kilometers from Aleppo and 40 kilometers from the Turkish border) and which welcomes children displaced by war to ensure some dignity and normalcy. This is an initiative under the responsibility of the promoters of Campaign “Algarve for Life”.

«Upon arrival of our container in Lesbos, together with our partners RefuGEN and PIKPA Village, we were contacted by the group “Solidarity Doesn't Know Borders” to collaborate in the effort to help Alwan Kindergarten», they explain.

Abdo Morie, 27, is the principal and currently has over 100 students in his charge, between the ages of 1 and 6, "children who are victims of an atrocious and implacable war". The entire team of seven professors and staff «has been working on a voluntary basis for over a year and, as one can easily imagine, they face a permanent scenario of insecurity and constant gaps in the most basic goods».

«As soon as we confirmed all the expenses related to the transport of the container to Lesbos, we quickly decided to make a donation to Alwan with the remaining funds from the campaign, which totaled the value of 400 euros. We then agreed to start a new fundraising campaign to help Alwan by the end of June”, explains the Campaign "Algarve for Life", which thus enters a new phase to boost fundraising and also promote dialogue and knowledge about Islamic Culture.

Syria kindergarten campaignThe Arab Afternoon, which will take place next Sunday, in Aljezur, has an "empathy-creating approach to the tragedy of Syrian refugees." "We consider it important not only to create empathy, among Portuguese citizens, towards the plight of refugees and the Syrian population that lives in a state of war, but also to involve institutions and associations in this effort of intercultural proximity", add those responsible for campaign.

Once again, the Campaign "Algarve for Life" it counts on the «voluntary collaboration» of the Red Cross of Lagos, which has made its bank account available again to receive and handle donations, as well as numerous institutional partnerships, among which the Regional Delegation of Culture of the Algarve, the Associação de Defense of the Historical and Archaeological Heritage of Aljezur, the Municipality of Aljezur and Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters.
