Jorge Augusto CorreiaTavirense Jorge Augusto Correia, recently awarded by the Government for his career as a doctor, marked by humanism, died this Tuesday in Tavira, aged 98.

His body will be in a burning chamber in the Igreja do Carmo, in that city, from today at 16 pm. The funeral leaves tomorrow, Wednesday, from the same church, at 11 am.

Jorge Correia was a personality very cherished by the people of Tavir, but not only that. In the city where he was born, in addition to working as a doctor, he was director and patron of the current Secondary School of Tavira, which was named after him. He also held the position of deputy of the National Assembly and president of the Chamber of Tavira, between 1959 and 1971.

As a clinician, after stints at Casa dos Pescadores, Hospital da Misericórdia and Caixa de Previdência de Faro, Jorge Augusto Correia started to work at the Tavira Health Center, of which he was director from 1984 to 1988 and where, in the atrium, there is a tombstone with his name, for his delivery to services and to the population. He was awarded the Medal of Merit by the Portuguese Medical Association in 2006, as a doctor who distinguished himself for his human and professional career.

Humanism was one of the traits that has always been associated with it. “For those who didn't have the means, he even paid for the medication. I gave births in the Serra de Tavira, arriving there on horseback. He was a caretaker for thousands of people with a great social conscience». described his son, at the time his father was awarded a Gold Medal from the Ministry of Health. Every 15 days, together with other surgeon colleagues, "I performed free operations at the Hospital de Tavira".

Soon after receiving this distinction, the Municipal Assembly of Tavira unanimously approved a vote of congratulation, following a proposal by the PS, which recalled his curriculum (see below).

Jorge Augusto Correia had been sick for a few months, which prevented him from personally receiving the medal that was awarded to him about a month ago.

About Jorge Augusto Correia:

Jorge Correia DoctorJorge Augusto Correia, son of José Augusto Correia and Adelina Berta dos Santos Pescada, was born in Tavira on April 5, 1918.

He began his university studies in 1935, graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, in July 1941, at the age of 23.

After his internship at the Civil Hospitals of Lisbon, he chose to practice his profession in Tavira, where he opened his office and was appointed doctor at the Casa do Povo da Conceição.

He was mobilized as Medical Officer in 1944, serving in Cape Verde until August 1945.

Upon his return, he returned to his private clinic and worked at the Casa dos Pescadores, at the Hospital da Santa Casa da Misericórdia and at the Caixa de Previdência do Distrito de Faro, predecessor of the District Center for Social Security.

He was president of the Municipality of Tavira between 1959 and 1971, a municipality that lived mainly from primary activity, but with cultural traditions that have always been one of its main characteristics, knowing how to interpret the lack of official Secondary Education as a serious shortage, which prevented its appreciation. of young people from Tavira, who, not having the economic conditions to attend private education, did not pursue secondary studies.

Jorge Augusto Correia asked for ministerial audiences, removed obstacles, asserted his position and knowledge and, after a continuous and long effort, managed to obtain authorization from above in the creation of the Technical School in Tavira, from October 1, 1961, of which he was the first director.

Jorge Augusto Correia also gathered the admiration of his locals as a deputy, who fought, above all, for the interests of the Algarve. At the time, he was the only deputy who proposed the creation of a State Secretariat for Youth, an initiative that would only later be recognized and put into practice.

In recent years, through an intense literary activity, he has written about twenty books, including an autobiography entitled “Facts and impressions throughout my life”.

Already after the publication of the Dispatch that designated the Secondary School of Tavira as “School Secondary with 3rd. Basic Education Cycle, Dr. Jorge Augusto Correia, Tavira”, the Ordem dos Médicos, at its XII Congress, awarded him the Medal of Merit, as a doctor who distinguished himself for his human and professional career.

The Municipality of Tavira distinguished his career by perpetuating his name in the city's toponymy, in 1993, and awarded him the Municipal Medal of Merit – Gold Grade, in 1999.
