Jorge Correia DoctorThe Tavirense doctor Jorge Correia, currently 98 years old, was awarded the Gold Medal by the Ministry of Health, a form of official recognition of his «dedication and tireless dedication to the medical field and to the public cause for over half a century», with a strong dose of humanism, according to the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve.

The distinction was awarded this Thursday, after a recommendation made to the Government by the Algarve's ARS, and received, in Lisbon, by Jorge Correia's granddaughter. But the nearly centenary recipient did not stop reacting, considering from his home in Tavira that, with this award, "the clinic triumphed", according to a note published on the website of this public institute.

The clinician, with a degree in medicine and surgery, began his long career «at the Casa do Povo da Conceição and at the Hospital da Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Tavira, where he worked, until he retired from the National Health Service at the age of 70 , for the deep dedication to its users».

Described by family members as "very fastidious", "generous" and always ready to help, this doctor (and not only) was "always attached to studies" and maintained "a great dedication to the constant search for new knowledge, new approaches and techniques in medical area, and always with the same commitment to clinical practice».

Alongside medicine, he was director and patron of the current Secondary School of Tavira, which was named after him. He also held the position of deputy of the National Assembly and Mayor of Tavira between 1959 and 1971 (awarded with the city's Gold Medal in 2000). It was , which has your name.

«With an enviable path of longevity and vast experience in the medical field acquired in Portugal and Cape Verde, often as a volunteer and unpaid doctor, but working in teams led by renowned specialists at the time, Dr. Jorge Correia did from medicine the “great passion of his life”, as his son Luís Correia proudly recounts when he receives the news about the award of the Gold Medal by the Ministry of Health», described the Algarve's ARS.

“At the time, being a doctor in Tavira was a work. There were few experts in the Algarve. My father, along with other fellow surgeons, operated people free of charge at Hospital de Tavira every 15 days. Afterwards, it came to life in the office, which was always full. But for those who couldn't afford it, he even paid for the medication. I gave births in the Serra de Tavira, arriving there on horseback. He has been a caregiver to thousands of people with a great social conscience. He always practiced medicine even in the period when he dedicated himself to politics», stressed Luís Correia.

Described by family members as "very quick", "generous" and always ready to help, this doctor with seven professions, who was "always attached to studies", as his son testifies, with a great dedication to the constant search for new knowledge, new approaches and techniques in the medical area, and always with the same commitment to clinical practice, he still held the place of deputy of the National Assembly and Mayor of Tavira between 1959 and 1971 (awarded with the city's Gold Medal in 2000). He was director and patron of the current Secondary School of Tavira, which bears his name.

After visiting the Casa dos Pescadores, the Hospital da Misericórdia and the Caixa de Previdência de Faro, Jorge Augusto Correia started to exercise his clinical practice at the Tavira Health Center, where he was Director from 1984 to 1988 and where, in the atrium, there is a tombstone with his name, for his delivery to services and to the population. He was awarded the Medal of Merit by the Portuguese Medical Association in 2006, as a doctor who distinguished himself for his human and professional career.
