Land of May 2016 (2)The greatest fresh goat cheese of the Algarve breed was tried at the 9th edition of Feira Terra de Maio, which took place this weekend at Azinhal. To produce the cheese weighing about 40 kilos and 80 centimeters in diameter, 170 liters of milk and 1,5 kg of Castro Marim fleur de sel were needed.

The local authority explains that this «was the great challenge of the 9th edition of the Feira Terra de Maio, the live production of the greatest fresh goat cheese of the Algarve breed, and it was a success».

Hundreds of people tasted the “giant cheese” that emerged from an initiative by the Municipality of Castro Marim and Queijaria do Azinhal and who intend, in a future edition, to apply for the initiative to the “Guinness World Records”.

According to the Chamber of Castro Marim, between May 20 and 22, “thousands of visitors visited Azinhal, attracted by the most genuine flavors and knowledge of the Algarve mountains. As in previous years, there was a large influx of Spanish public, which reinforces the importance of cooperation between the three municipalities of the Eurocity of Guadiana: Castro Marim, Vila Real de St. António and Ayamonte».

«Promoting the Algarvian Breed Goat and the knowledge and flavors associated with it, is the motto of this event, which has been growing and gaining space in the cultural program calendar in the Algarve and also in Andalusia», explains the Chamber of Castro Marim .

The objective of the event is also to "promote local and regional products resulting from activities linked to agriculture and livestock, as well as the activities themselves, and also to increase the volume of sales through direct marketing".

Live crafts, popular and traditional music, workshops, exhibition of Algarvian goats, bread and cheese workshops, donkey rides, live cooking demonstrations, taverns with varied local and Baixo Guadiana cuisine, recreation of 'Vila de Amêijoas', falconry, children's entertainment, among many other attractions, made this Land of May more.
