The proposal of the permanent executive of the Chamber of Faro de inclusion of another 4,3 million euros in the Municipal Budget, for investment in various areas, will only be voted for within a week.

The matter was on the agenda at the Chamber meeting that took place this Monday, but the opposition asked for the vote to be postponed to next Tuesday, June 7, at 16 pm, in order to be able to come up with proposals.

The municipal executive intends to reflect the positive management balance of 2015 in the 2016 accounts, something that is possible, as explained by the president of the Chamber of Faro Rogério Bacalhau, last week, due to the fact that, for the first time since 2010, the “profit” of an exercise does not have to be all spent on the payment of overdue debts.

Thus, the executive proposes to invest this money in several areas. The biggest slice will be for a second phase of the Faro Requalifica, a program for the recovery of the road network and urban revitalization, for which more than 2 million euros will be channeled. Also significant will be the amount earmarked for the restoration of public buildings, such as schools, pavilions, swimming pools, leisure areas and sports facilities (1,6 million euros).

The Faro local authority also intends to double the funds already provided for supporting associations and for parish councils, as well as launching a program to support the activity of Baixa Comercial.

Undergoing a process of financial revitalization, which involved recourse to two loans, one to the State's Local Economy Support Program and the other to traditional banking, Faro it managed to pay many millions of euros in short-term debt and significantly reduce liabilities, which amounted to 71,7 million euros in 2010 and today stands at 43,8 million.

More than balancing the balance, it was possible to transform, through loans, short-term debt into medium and long-term obligations, which allow for better treasury management. An example is the use of the management balance of the previous year.

The City Council of Faro has been providing financial support to Parish Councils, as they do not always have sufficient means to carry out the activities that are essential to the fulfillment of their mission.

This year, the investment will double and will be fixed at 240.000 euros (the reinforcement is 120 thousand), mainly destined to the repair of paths.
