Cycling in the AlgarveThe Algarve team, which has more than 40 cyclists, has already started pedaling towards victory, in the European Cycling Challenge (ECC), which started this Sunday, May 1st, and continues until the end of the month.

Given last year's excellent results, the Algarve is preparing to conquer the podium, surpassing the nearly 14 thousand kilometers recorded in 2015.

Across Europe, there are 52 teams representing cities or regions from different European zones, in this 5th edition of the ECC. Among them, the Algarve team, supported by AMAL, the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve, which launched an invitation to Algarve cyclists, with the purpose of encouraging habits that characterize a life with better quality and health, aware of the impact of car use.

The initiative, on a European scale, seeks to promote the use of the bicycle as the main means of transport in everyday commuting and, at the same time, identify the routes adopted for cycling in the regional territory, with journeys being recorded through a mobile application free – Cycling365.

In the previous edition, São Brás de Alportel was the Algarve municipality with the highest number of kilometers covered, with a total of 1.692 kilometers, followed by Castro Marim and Loulé, with 401 kilometers and 319 kilometers, respectively.

european cycling challenge 2016The 5th edition of the ECC began the day immediately before AMAL approved the subscription of the Commitment for the Bicycle, a project of the Technological Platform for Bicycle and Smooth Mobility at the University of Aveiro, with the aim of boosting the use of this means of transport.

Aware of the bicycle's contribution to the environment, traffic, sustainable development and the economy of the region, AMAL claims to integrate these initiatives «with enormous interest and commitment, determined to support decisions and measures that contribute to building a greener future for the Algarve».
