Mexican Sonido Gallo Negro, Brazilian Dona Onete and Russian Otava Yo will also be at the MED Festival. The three names were announced this Wednesday by the organization and will join the 18 artists already confirmed for the edition that takes place on June 30th, July 1st, 2nd and 3rd, in the Historic Area of Loulé.

Hailing from the eastern part of Mexico City, Sonido Gallo Negro «is an imposing 9-piece instrumental composition that channels the mysticism of Cumbia Peruana, from the 60s. The band combines styles such as Cumbia da Amazonia, Huayño, Cumbia Sonidera, Boogaloo and Chicha (Cumbia Peruana) with electric guitars, a Farfisa organ, theremin, flute and, of course, Latin percussion», says Câmara de Loulé.

«In tracks from Italian westerns, psychedelics or based on the surf culture of the 60s and 70s, cultural movements, contemporary with the emergence of Cumbia, echo in his compositions. The proposal of Sonido Gallo Negro enriches this musical genre, with its exotic and sui generis nature, accompanied by impressive visual effects, created simultaneously live, by the designer Dr. Alderete», adds the municipality.

Brazil will have several representations at the 13th MED Festival and, in addition to the already confirmed Emicida and Chico Correa, one of the names that, according to the organization, generates more curiosity is Dona Onete, artistic name of Ionete da Silveira Gama, born in 1938, in Cachoeira do Arari, in the interior of the state of Pará. This Brazilian singer, composer and poet lived in Belém, where she spent her childhood, and later in Igarapé-Miri.

She was Secretary of Culture and Professor of History and Studies in Pará, and founded and organized folk dance groups and carnival associations. Despite a lifetime linked to the culture of the state of Pará, it was only in the mid-2000s that Dona Onete was discovered by the Coletivo Rádio Cipó group and, from then on, began her artistic career. With over 350 songs composed, Dona Onete released her first CD only in 2012, full of boleros and stamps. The septuagenarian Dona Onete is considered the “Diva of the carimbó chamegado”.

From Eastern Europe to Loulé, the Russians Ottawa Yo «promise to bring to the MED Festival a lot of partying on stage. A group of Folk musicians, in St. Petersburg, Russia, spontaneously formed, in 2005, Otava Yo. They wanted to create new interpretations of Folk Russo, open to all who had their ears wide open and relive old themes that had already been forgotten», explains Câmara de Loulé.

His first album “By the pharmacy” was released in 2006. After three years of experiences, his second album “Once Upon a Time” appeared in 2009, and here his notion of Beat Russo came completely “to the surface”. This would be followed by “Christmas” in 2011, “an album filled with traditional Christmas songs, a turning point in a completely different direction. In 2013 “What Are Those for Songs” came to further develop their spiritually uplifting music».

According to the organization of MED, «Ottawa Yo transforms Russian Folk themes into powerful dance music – a new Russian Beat».

These three names join the artists already confirmed for the MED 2016 Festival: Dubioza Kolektiv (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Tinariwen (Mali), Emicida (Brazil), Hindi Zahra (Morocco/France), Alo Wala (Denmark/Norway/States United), Ana Tijoux (Chile), António Zambujo, Capicua, Aldina Duarte, Isaura, Fandango, Marafona and Rocky Marsiano (Portugal), Mbongwana Star (Congo), Danakil (France), Moh!
