algarvian presidentsO Algarve genealogy portal, authored by the researcher Nuno Campos Inácio, highlights today, the day the new President of the Portuguese Republic took office, the up until now known genealogy of the three Algarvians who held the position of President of the Republic and a President of the Republic of Brazil , descendant of the Algarve.

The Algarvians are Manuel Teixeira Gomes, born in Portimão on 27 May 1860, and who was the 7th President of the Portuguese Republic (between 6 August 1923 and 11 December 1925), Admiral José Mendes Cabeçadas Júnior, born in São Clemente, Loulé, on August 19, 1883, who was the 9th President of the Portuguese Republic (the 1st of the National Dictatorship) and at the same time President of the Council of Ministers, in the brief period between May 31, 1926 and June 16 of the same year, and finally Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, who today is no longer President of the Republic, giving way to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva, born in Boliqueime (Loulé), on 15 July 1939, was the 17th President of the Republic of Portugal.

Finally, the Brazilian President of Algarvian descent was the carioca João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo, 30th President of the Republic of Brazil, a position he held from March 15, 1979 to March 15, 1985. He died in 1999, in his native Rio de Janeiro .

Genealogist Nuno Campos Inácio

Genealogist Nuno Inácio revealed to the Sul Informação that President João Baptista de Figueiredo was a descendant of Captain Luís de Figueiredo Leitão, born in Monchique, where he was born around 1710, and that he went to Brazil.

The parents of this Captain Luís de Figueiredo Leitão «were married in Lagoa on January 10, 1685 and were Manuel Rodrigues Estevens, from Monchique, and Luísa de Figueiredo, one of the decolonized from Tangier, who were forced to come to the Algarve». For, when Portugal abandoned this and other Moroccan squares, «the Portuguese families from Tangier were forced to come to the Algarve, while those from Mazagão were forced to go to Brazil, where they founded Nova Mazagão. The bride, probably still born in Tangier, was a resident of Lagoa», explained the researcher.

"This same couple from Monchique/Lagoa is ascendant of the Barão do Triunfo, who was the great-uncle of President Figueiredo," he added.

João Figueiredo was the last President of the period of the military regime. His government held the first Brazilian civil election since 1964, which would decree the end of the Military Regime.
