winesMore than 90 references will be evaluated at the IX Algarve Wine Contest, which will take place on April 11, at the Convento de S. José, in Lagoa.

Organized by the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), in partnership with the Municipality of Lagoa and the Association of Escanções de Portugal, the competition awards the best bottled Algarve wines.

O IX Algarve Wine Contest is open to white, rosé and red wines, produced in the Algarve Wine Region, entitled to the Protected Designation of Origin Lagos, Lagoa, Portimão and Tavira and Geographical Indication Algarve.

More than one wine from each category can be submitted to the competition. However, wines that have already been awarded will not be admitted. For this year, the organization estimates the evaluation of over 90 references, surpassing the participation in previous editions of Algarve producers.

“We aim to surpass the participation rate of last year and ensure the registration of more than 20 producers, surpassing the 90 references of wines to be tasted. This is an important event, as we distinguish the quality and variety of our wines”, stresses Carlos Gracias, president of CVA.

“Our mission is to consolidate the image of the Algarve wine and initiatives like this prove that the region's commitment to viticulture is a bet to win”, he concludes.

The wines admitted are evaluated in a blind tasting, carried out by a group of tasters made up of panels. Each panel of judges is made up of a minimum number of five judges and a president.

In the end, the selected wines will be awarded the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and also the Grand Gold Medal, for the best Algarve wine.

The awards will be delivered at a later ceremony, on the occasion of Fatacil 2016.
