Algarvian supporters of Sampaio da Nóvoa are "disappointed" not to see the candidate they supported go to a second round, but Joaquina Matos, one of the candidate's representatives in the Algarve, believes that "the campaign was worth it", for the messages that were past.
The mayor of Lagos, elected by the PS, reaffirmed the "great appreciation" she has for Sampaio da Nóvoa, who considers having brought a different (and necessary) speech to the national political debate. "It's a shame, because I think it would make a great contribution to the strengthening of democracy in Portugal," he considered.
«I heard Dr. Sampaio da Nóvoa, for the first time, in his speech on June 10th. Since then, I have been following him closely. He is a great man, with an enormous culture, and a great Portuguese. He was not elected president, but I am sure that he will continue to make his contribution to the country», said Joaquina Matos.
Even so, he says he had some expectations regarding the role of future president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. «I listened carefully to his speech and was happy to hear him say that he wants to unite the Portuguese and end the climate of tension that exists in Portugal», he revealed.
