Lagoa_Cidade_do_Vinho 2016Lagoa was chosen to be the “City of Wine of 2016”, an award given by AMPV – Association of Portuguese Municipalities of Wine.

The Lagoon candidacy deserved the support and partnership of a hundred entities from across the Algarve region and convinced the AMPV Board of Directors and Intermunicipal Assembly, which met this Tuesday at the Wine Museum, in Cartaxo.

The Algarve council competed for this title with four other municipalities in «strong areas in the Portuguese winemaking spectrum», including the neighbor of Silves. Ourém, Ponte de Lima and Santa Marta de Penaguião were the other suitors.

The Câmara de Lagoa highlighted, in a press release, that his candidacy received 50 percent of the votes, which means that the jury's choice left no room for doubt.

AMVP's governing bodies praised “the work developed, not only in the dissemination of its wine region but also in the promotion of national wine at various events, namely at the “Lagoa Wine Show” – with the success that was attributed to it – and at Fatacil» .

«This election represents the recognition of the effort, dedication and work carried out by a multidisciplinary team of the municipality throughout 2015, “Year of Wine and Vine – Lagoa, Flavor of Culture”», added the municipality of Lagos.

However, the Municipality of Silves has already reacted to the choice of AMVP, congratulating the Lagoon municipality for the award and expressing "the desire to support/collaborate in the initiatives that may be developed.", as it had done "from the very beginning". This was the first time Silves applied for this title.

Within the scope of the "Cidade do Vinho 2016", the Câmara de Lagoa wants to "contribute to enhancing the richness, diversity and common characteristics of wine culture and all its influences on society, landscape, economy, gastronomy and heritage" of county.

The local authority has already started to think about a set of initiatives and announced that they will start very early, on January 6th, with the celebration of Epiphany at the Centro de Congressos do Arade, in Parchal, «with a program to be announced soon».
