sun duathlonScience and sport will be allied in Estremoz, district of Évora, next Saturday and Sunday, in an initiative that allows you to visit the planets of the solar system by running and cycling.

On the 24th and 25th of October, the fourth edition of Sol – Duathlon of Estremoz will take place and, although the proposal may seem strange, it will even be possible to visit the planets of our Solar System by running and cycling.

In fact, in 2007 the Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz installed in the municipality one of the few Solar Systems at scale existing in the world, with a Sun with more than 3 meters in diameter located in the center of the city and Pluto with 5,6 mm installed. at the door of the castle of Évoramonte more than 14 kilometers away.

A tour of this Solar System is not only an opportunity to better understand the Universe we live in, but also to enjoy some of the beautiful landscapes of northern Alentejo, as most of the planets are in small and pretty villages around the city of Estremoz.

In 2012, a partnership with the Portuguese Triathlon Federation allowed the launch of an annual activity, where Science and Sport are combined in an unprecedented way, creating the Sun – Duathlon of Estremoz, the only sporting event that runs through the entire Solar System … in a few hours.

Aware of the growing importance of the dissemination of scientific knowledge to the general public in maintaining and developing a project for a modern and inclusive society, the Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz, the School of Science and Technology of the University of Évora and the Institute of Earth Sciences, who had already been responsible for the conception and installation of this curious Solar System in collaboration with the Estremoz City Council, teamed up once again to create a unique event with the Portuguese Triathlon Federation, this time crossing Science and Sport.

The Sol-Duatlo, which takes place in collaboration with the Triathlon School Santo António de Évora and the MTB Associations of Estremoz “Rota d'Ossa” and “Sobe e Desce”, includes a running and mountain biking event, wherever you want. athletes and the public can participate in various scientific activities.

Although the competitions are included in the national championship, they are open to federated and non-federated members of all ages, strongly encouraging the participation of people who are not regular practitioners of sports activities; the existence of various forms of participation, including relay teams, makes this a truly unique weekend in Estremoz.

Sports Events that are part of the IV Duathlon of the Solar System:
