The strong swell that hit the Portuguese coast yesterday “invaded” Odeceixe beach and generated a wave of concern on social networks due to possible “irreparable” damage to the sand. However, José Amarelinho, mayor of Aljezur, says that "it is a perfect lie" that the beach is destroyed and that what happened in Odeceixe "is not new to anyone", since "this has always been a beach very exposed'.
Jornal de Notícias reported yesterday that Odeceixe beach – one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal in the category of Praia de Arriba – had suffered damage “considered irreparable” and cites David Rosa, owner of a surf school in Odeceixe, who considers that “the works that took place at the beginning during the summer, in the scope of the Sociedade Polis Litoral Sudoeste, they removed the sand from the dunes that impeded the advance of the sea».
Contacted by Sul Informação, the mayor of Aljezur refutes this idea and says that this “hysteria” around Odeceixe beach only “causes bad publicity for the beach and for the municipality”.
The mayor recalled the late 80s and early 90s with a postcard, which can be seen in the photo gallery above, where what is now the sand that will have been destroyed is just a narrow peninsula and that only proves that this is a recurring situation over the years on that beach and “is due to natural causes”.
Regarding the Polis Society interventions on that beach, José Amarelinho explains that «sand replacements were made on the seafront, so that the sand of Odeceixe beach could be used, which happened during the summer» and that «there is a project that what remains to be done, with the placement of walkways and stakes, which helps to reconsolidate the dune».
For the mayor, “what happened was a strong tide and, today, as you can see in the photos, the beach is there. The sea itself will replace the sands», he guaranteed. The mayor also considered "a joke in bad taste" what was said about the possible destruction of the beach.
Last year, in January, the beach of Odeceixe had been quite affected with the passage of the Storm Hercules, which affected many other beaches on the West Coast.
