pulmonology congressThe XXXI Congress of Pulmonology, which takes place in the Algarve from November 5th to 7th, is this year the stage for the meeting of scientific societies that meet again for the constitution of the Respiratory Association of the Portuguese Language (ARELP).

Portuguese Society of Pulmonology (SPP), Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology (SBPT), Latin American Thorax Association (ALAT), European Respiratory Society (ERS) and representatives of Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde sign, on the 5th, the constitution of this International Non-Profit Association.

It was in Amsterdam, on the 27th of September, during the ERS International Congress, that all Portuguese-speaking countries gathered to sign the letter of intent that brings to Portugal the set of organizations that will make ARELP a tool for promoting the respiratory health in Portuguese-speaking countries.

The statutes have been created and their signature is scheduled for the opening session of the XXXI Pneumology Congress, which will take place on November 5th, at 17 pm, at the EPIC Sana Congress Center, in Albufeira.

The Association will consist of Founding members, Affiliate members, Individual members and Honorary members. SPP, SBPT, ALAT and ERS were identified as Founding members, representing the largest respiratory societies and recognized as such in the Portuguese language space.

Affiliate members will be organizations that have missions similar to those of the Founding members and that can substantially contribute to the association's objectives.

Individual members will be respiratory professionals who reside in the Portuguese-speaking space and who are best positioned to represent the respiratory community in countries without national societies or organizations. Honorary members will be elected by the General Assembly.

The ARELP Executive Committee will constitute the Forum of Portuguese Language Respiratory Associations (FARELP), as a working group whose objective will be focused on activities related to medical education and the promotion of respiratory health.

Lausanne will be ARELP's domicile and the secretariat service will be provided by the Portuguese Society of Pulmonology. The president of ARELP will initially be an opinion leader of the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology.

Although the initiative came from Portugal, it is «an organization that is open and receptive to the establishment of multilateral relations with other scientific societies, based on the creation of partnerships, the sharing of knowledge and experiences, as well as the promotion of the Portuguese language. as an element of scientific exchange in Portuguese-speaking countries», stresses the SPP.

According to Carlos Robalo Cordeiro, president of the SPP, ARELP constitutes «an important step not only in the affirmation of the Portuguese language as a link and knowledge sharing, but also a way to alleviate existing discrepancies in terms of access to training and knowledge in the field of Pulmonology. We want to encourage support for training and the promotion of respiratory health in these countries, facilitating access to internships, scholarships, various training programs and the digital formats of Portuguese and Brazilian journals of Pulmonology».
