marmelete arbutus houseAnyone who wants to know how Medronho brandy from Serra de Monchique is produced and even participate in the entire process, from picking the fruit to its distillation, has a way to do it from this Saturday: it will be inaugurated at 11:00 am, the House of Medronho in Marmelete.

This project, promoted by the Parish Council of Marmelete and with the support of the Proder and the Municipality of Monchique, «has the mission of making known an ancient and traditional activity in the region: the distillation of medronho brandy».

In this space, where a typical arbutus-tree distillery is recreated, with all the utensils used in the art of making brandy from arbutus-tree berries, the visitor has the possibility, through scheduled visits, not only to taste the drink and the products of the region (from sausages to sweets), as well as discovering many of the secrets involved in its production.

In addition to having a fully functioning boiler during the usual working time, the various stages of obtaining the drink are described on the existing exhibition panels, from picking the fruit to fermenting the must, passing through the distillation and bottling of the drink. A documentary is also shown, with illustrative images of the entire process.

Anyone who wants to can still experience this whole reality live. In partnership with the producers of medronho, and having as a starting point the Casa do Medronho, the visitor is invited to follow an itinerary passing through the licensed distilleries that adhere to the project, being provided with a route created for that purpose.

You can also actively participate in the entire production process (from picking the fruit to its distillation) by subscribing to the workshops promoted by Casa do Medronho.

In short, Casa do Medronho intends to be a «singular and differentiated space throughout the Algarve, contributing to the promotion and preservation of the ancestral art of obtaining a brandy with unique characteristics from the medronho».
