2The Municipality of Lagoa presented its candidacy for “Lagoa Cidade do Vinho 2016”, on the 22nd of October, at the Câmara do Cartaxo, with the Association of Portuguese Municipalities of Wine.

The candidacy was formalized by councilor Luís Encarnação, accompanied by a team of technicians from the municipality, in the area of ​​Sports, Tourism and Strategic Planning, taking into account «the ancestral connection of the Municipality to agricultural production in general and to wine, in particular – a a legacy that matters to preserve and enhance, as a differentiating factor and an important contribution, in the current situation, to the promotion of sustainable economic development».

Lagoa's candidacy for the “City of Wine 2016” has the support and partnership of a hundred entities, namely municipalities, administrative entities and economic agents, from all over the Algarve region, being, therefore, a candidacy of supra-municipal scope.

LOGO-CITY-OF-WINE-2016-LAGOAThe municipality of Lagos stresses that, particularly in the last decade, there has been «a growth in the wine sector, both in terms of quantity and quality of wines produced, both in the municipality of Lagoa and in the region, as a result of the commitment and work of agents economic and producers, true entrepreneurs who found in this region favorable conditions for a successful activity that have resulted in internationally awarded wines».

«Since the Algarve is an internationally known tourist destination, which annually receives millions of visitors from the four corners of the world, it is assumed, therefore, as a privileged showcase for the promotion of the best that is done in Portugal, including the wine production', he adds.

The candidate municipalities for the Wine Capital had to draw up an annual program of cultural, training and awareness actions related to wine, with national visibility and respective budget, exploring their particularities and showing proof of creativity, taking into account criteria such as strengthening the sensitivity to wine culture and traditions, community mobilization, consolidation of links with the region and with all Portuguese wine territories, among others, being, above all, a catalytic project for the city's development.

In the Algarve, in addition to Lagoa, the neighboring municipality of Silves has already formalized its candidacy the Wine Capital 2016.
