University of Algarve_rectorship_lowThe University of Algarve (UAlg) registered a growth of 19% in the number of candidates placed in the 1st phase of the National Competition for Access to Higher Education, consolidating the increase that had already been registered last year (14%) and asserting itself as the institution that grew the most among the set of Portuguese universities.

According to the results of the 1st phase of the National Competition for Access to Higher Education, published today, there is a growth of 11,4% nationwide.

Data published by the Directorate General for Higher Education indicate an increase of 4290 candidates (+11,4%) placed at national level.

In turn, the number of candidates placed at the University of Algarve increased from 942, in 2014, to 1120, in 2015, which corresponds to an increase of 19% (+178 students).

This increase, associated with the adjustment of the training offer, through a reduction of 54 vacancies (from 1420 in 2014 to 1366 in 2015), allowed a 44% decrease in vacancies not occupied (from 481 in 2014 to 270 in 2015).

The number of courses with all vacancies occupied doubled, from 12 to 24.

The percentage of occupation of vacancies placed in the competition increased by 16 percentage points, from 66% to 82%, remaining within the levels of the national average, which rose from 74% in 2014 to 83% in 2015.

The progression of the percentage of vacancies was very similar in the two subsystems of UAlg: in the university subsystem, from 75% to 90%; and in the polytechnic subsystem, from 60% to 76%.

At national level, Universities registered a percentage of occupation of vacancies of 94% and Polytechnic Institutes 67%.

The increase in the number of 1st option candidates (+ 28%) to UAlg courses (from 724 in 2014 to 940 in 2015) also accompanied the increase in the number of places.

Simultaneously, in this indicator, UAlg registered the most intense growth among the set of universities.

At national level, the number of candidates for the 1st phase of the national competition for access to higher education rose by 13,8%, compared to 2014.

António Branco, rector of the University of Algarve, welcomes “the consolidation of the growth in the number of candidates placed in the 1st phase, reflected in the second consecutive year of increase in new students, even more so when it is accompanied by a high increase in 1st option placements”.

The rector reiterates that “UAlg will also provide these more than a thousand new students with academic training in an environment of great proximity and a good example of the practice of citizenship”.
