Octopus Festival 2015Tertúlia do Polvo is back and, in addition to debating the fishing and management of this species, it wants to help solve the problems faced by fishing communities dependent on this resource.

Today, Friday, there is a new session of the second phase of this project, at the Olhãopesca facilities, in Olhão, at 17:30 pm.

The Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMar), associated with the University of Algarve, relaunched this initiative last June, already with the prospect of receiving support from community funds, through Promar, which ended up happening.

In this second cycle of Tertúlias do Polvo, the idea is to «bring problems to the communities that feel them the most», promoting sessions in different places in the region, although there are also others scheduled for the University of Algarve.

If the first cycle of meetings focused on getting the different associations in the sector to talk about the management of this resource, the one that started about three months ago intends to pick up «the problems that the associations identify as being more urgent to discuss and seek other parties stakeholders, who can help to solve or mitigate the problem, broadening the discussion».

In today's session, “who will be important to bring to our meetings” will be debated.

To get here, it was necessary to follow a path that was not always easy. «There are many associations here in the Algarve, but we noticed that there is a great level of disaggregation, many latent conflicts and points where understanding is difficult. Even so, the main problems faced by the communities were possible», he explained.

Although the cycle has already started in June, this can be seen as the first gathering of the project's new life, as funding was secured relatively recently.

«We have already started this second phase, but only now we have the project “Octopus Meeting – first-person management” approved and working, we finally managed to sponsor the meetings, which was a difficulty we had until we surpassed this bureaucratic phase». as revealed to RUA FM the researcher Mafalda Rangel, who coordinates this project.

Before, the sessions of Tertúlia do Polvo were financed by the CCMar itself, which wanted to discuss «the measures of management of the octopus that were considered important here in the Algarve». “But we thought that it would be incomplete and that a great human potential for discussion and sharing of ideas would be lost there”, considered Mafalda Rangel.

The solution found so as not to lose momentum was a candidacy for Promar.

Altogether, until the end of the year, "regular gatherings" will be promoted, open "to all who want to participate".
