Gabriel Clemente 1Gabriel Clemente was an amateur photographer, in what the term is most literal: he loved photography. And it was through the lens that he portrayed the Algarve and, in particular, the municipality of Albufeira, which he chose to live in the golden years of his retirement.

Lord of great generosity, Gabriel shared it with everyone, whether on his Facebook page or on the pages of magazines and newspapers in the Algarve, such as the Sul Informação, your photographs.

Unexpectedly, last December, his heart betrayed him and Gabriel Clemente died. Albufeira Town Council, together with a group of friends and relatives of the late photographer, inaugurated on Thursday, August 20, a municipal holiday, the exhibition “Porto de Abrigo – Homage to Gabriel Clemente”, with 20 of the best images from county captured by him in recent years.

The opening of the exhibition, which was attended by Gabriel Clemente's wife, daughter and even a granddaughter, who came especially from Germany, where they live, was an emotional ceremony.

Carina Evangelista, a daughter, recalled with emotion that her father "didn't photograph with his eyes, but with his heart and soul."

Elisabete Rodrigues, journalist and director of Sul Informação, invited to speak on behalf of her friends, recalled the "immense generosity" of a man who chose Olhos d'Água, in Albufeira, and the Algarve as his land of heart, despite having been born in the Leiria area and having emigrated, as a boy, with his parents, to Germany, where he became a man, married and worked.

Carlos Silva e Sousa, mayor of Albufeira, recalled that “Gabriel Clemente left a mark within us for his greatness as a human being and, at the same time, for the legacy that embodies his art, well represented here in these fabulous images”.
