family bike rideAhead of Bristol and Barcelona and just behind the city of Nantes, this is how the Algarve won a prominent place in the last edition of the European Cycling Challenge, which took place during the month of May.

The success translated by the participation of the Algarve team leads AMAL to prepare the pedals for the 2016 challenge.

Nearly 14 thousand kilometers made it possible to carry out a survey of the roads and paths that are taken daily by urban cyclists in the various municipalities of the Algarve, «a valuable collection to better understand the territory and the circuits most chosen by the Algarve community», stresses AMAL.

Through this initiative, promoted by AMAL, «it became possible to unveil some gaps in the legislative framework of our country that directly affect the bicycle user, a prominent personality in what is considered a contemporary transport model, characterized by favoring the environmentally friendly means of travel'.

This was one of the main objectives of the European challenge that invited Europe to record the routes taken during the usual daily journeys by bicycle, through an application that could be installed on the mobile phone and thus count the kilometers traveled by registered users.

european cyclingBy giving rise to a platform for dialogue and cooperation, participation in the European Cycling Challenge 2015 also contributed to rekindling the debate on promoting the use of bicycles in the region, a paradigm that raises new challenges to the theme of mobility in the Algarve, where only 1% of daily trips are made by bicycle.

AMAL wishes to congratulate the performance of the Algarve in this latest edition and confirms the Algarve's interest in participating in the next challenge, to take place in 2016, believing that the results will be even more interesting and better if more entities from across the region are involved.

Some numbers to highlight:

 1,03% of commuting in the Algarve use a bicycle

 > 4 million residents in Portugal use smartphones

 13.990 km registered in the participation of Algarve in ECC2015
