dunes1Taking children to participate in the “Discovering the Dunes” project is Portimão's way of commemorating the World Environment Day tomorrow, June 5th.

This is a field trip by the 4th year students of the EB1 of Chão das Donas, to the dune system and Alvor beach, where the main species of plants present will be observed in loco.

At the end, a game will be promoted that will allow students to understand the importance of a well-preserved dune system.

In Portimão, there are dunes in Alvor which, together with the dunes of Meia-Praia, protect the most important lagoon area in the Barlavento Algarvio – the Ria de Alvor.

The municipality's environmental education project has «a pivotal role in the dissemination of the natural heritage present in Portimão and also in raising awareness of the importance of valuing and preserving natural resources and the quality of the environment in Portimão and region», stresses the municipality.

dunes2Actions on the ground tend to promote «the scientific spirit and contact with the nature of students, stimulate their creativity and promote the discussion of solutions to current environmental challenges».

These activities consist of field trips to the coast, during low tide, to explore the biological diversity between tides of a rocky platform, field trips to the dune system and Alvor beach and study visits to a section of a stream, with the collection and identification of macroinvertebrates. H

There are also natural routes for exploring the environment, during which different senses are used (sight, touch, smell). Students also have the opportunity to cook food cooked in solar ovens and watch the movie “Há vida na ria”.

The Educational Action project of the Portimão Council this school year was guided by a set of actions on the ground and covered about 1216 students from various school groups in the municipality.

“Discovering…colors and shapes of nature”, which covered two 2nd year classes with around 50 students, “Discovering the seabed”, with 18 classes (432 Kindergarten students, EB1 (2nd year) and EB23 (8th year), “discovering……dunes”, with 12 classes (288 3rd year students), “discovering……birds”, with 9 classes (216 students from 3rd and 4th year), “ discovering……ria”, with 15 classes (345 students) from Kindergartens and EB1, an activity carried out in collaboration with the Educational Workshop of the Portimão Museum, and also “discovering renewable energies”, with three classes with 75 kindergarten students in the municipality of Portimão.
