HPX_15_2 NATO is carrying out an experimentation exercise at the Port of Portimão. The Harbor Protection Experimentation 2015 started on the 17th of June and will end on the 22nd of this month. Around 140 operators from Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Spain and a Nato Center of Excellence are participating in this exercise.

According to the Portuguese Navy, the exercise is "aimed at the practical validation of doctrine, tactics, techniques, procedures and interoperability tests between the participating means and forces."

The exercise, which has the support of the port authorities, also includes naval resources and forces from Portugal, Germany and Spain, as well as a German Harbor Protection command and control module.

“Missions, especially in response to crisis scenarios, require the use of ports to support expeditionary operations. This reality requires many challenges, as the aim is to guarantee the normal functioning of the port activity and, simultaneously, to establish areas of safety that are essential for the referred operations”, the Navy also refers on its official website.

The exercise is part of NATO's Smart Defense initiative, in which Portugal leads a project for the development of the military capacity of Harbor Protection and which is part of the objectives identified in the NATO Defense Planning Process.
