The New Outpatient Unit of the Hospital Particular de Alvor was inaugurated yesterday and, with it, the hyperbaric chamber, which the Sul Informação advanced, first hand, which would be installed in the Algarve.

The hyperbaric chamber, which has been installed at the HPA since May last year, was offered to the Algarve by the Association for the Promotion and Development of Underwater Tourism (Musubmar) and cost 600 thousand euros, requiring an investment of more than 100 thousand euros to install it. It should be up and running very soon.

The hyperbaric chamber had been initially offered to the Hospital do Barlavento Algarvio, in Portimão, having been signed a protocol between the administration of CHBA and Musubmar, in May 2013.

However, when the Centro Hospitalar Algarvio was created, with the merger of hospitals in Faro, Portimão and Lagos, the new administrator, Pedro Nunes, communicated the lack of interest in receiving this equipment, so Musubmar, which manages the Ocean Revival Project, had to find an alternative for the installation of the hyperbaric chamber, whose public tender for acquisition was already underway and even practically concluded.

Although the Hyperbaric Chamber is installed in a private hospital, Luís Sá Couto, responsible for the Ocean Revival Project, revealed in May 2014 to the Sul Informação that in the protocol signed with the HPA, «we have taken into account that an agreement will be signed with the National Health Service, to make the camera available to NHS users».
