On May 14, the Barlavento Algarvio Hospital Center (CHBA) and the Association for the Promotion and Development of Underwater Tourism (Musubmar) signed a cooperation protocol regarding the hyperbaric chamber to be installed in the hospital in Portimão.

The signing ceremony, which was attended by José Ramos, chairman of the Board of Directors of CHBA, and Pedro Pequenochinho and Luís Sá Couto, representatives of Musubmar, took place on the premises of that Hospital Institution and was attended by the other members of the Board of Directors.

This is an agreement in which Musubmar assigns to CHBA a hyperbaric chamber, with the capacity to treat 8 patients simultaneously and which will be physically installed on floor -1 of the Portimão Unit, in the future Hyperbaric Medicine Unit.

The CHBA explains, in a press release, that this is a formalization of closer relations and contacts, which has been happening between Musubmar and CHBA, in the context of the project “Ocean Revival”, and that it intends to «provide the municipality of Portimo of the conditions to become a reference, in terms of underwater tourist destination, with the Underwater Park located in Alvor (which involves the submersion of four Portuguese Navy ships)».

The creation of the park “implies some criteria, in terms of safety, for those who practice diving and, in this sense, the desire to provide this Hospital Institution with conditions to receive divers who suffer a diving accident arose, since the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit nearest is located in the Portuguese capital».

Thus, with the signing of this protocol, «Portimão and its Hospital Institution will enjoy a medical value that, in addition to offering security to the practice of recreational diving, has numerous clinical applicability that make the region more autonomous and the Hospital Unit as a reference in this area,” adds the CHBA.

«The importance of Tourism, as the Algarve's main economic source, is an indisputable reality. The exploration of the various tourist offers that the region has should converge with the growing adaptation of support infrastructure, particularly in the health area, with the equipping of technical requirements that generate more confidence in the tourist in the region», concludes the note from the Hospital Center.
