YOU DECIDE 2015 beginning night 8 MayThe University of Algarve, through the “Tu Decides” project, promoted by the Psychology Office of the Medical Services of Social Action Services, is once again present at the Algarve Academic Week.

As in previous years, the stand has a service desk where visitors can get advice and even take a quick HIV test. Around 50 condoms will also be available throughout the week, which will be distributed by a team of six volunteers. There will also be a pre and post alcohol test counter.

According to the UAlg Communication Office, «following the data obtained from a relatively large sample of individuals, it was concluded that this paradigm of preventive intervention can constitute a very effective psycho-pedagogical measure in the prevention of risky road behaviors. under the influence of TAS above the limit allowed by law'.

UAlg's Psychology Office carried out a study that analyzed the results obtained by the intervention in the prevention of risky road behavior under the influence of blood alcohol rates (BAC) above the limit allowed by law. This investigation used a sample of 4317 individuals, 2892 males and 1425 females, aged between 13 and 47 years.

Regarding the results, it was found that 51,7% of the subjects had alcohol levels above the legal value (0,49 grams/liter), with men consuming greater amounts of alcohol compared to women. In males, 53,3% intended to drive, but only 39,9% made that decision after taking the test. With regard to females, 38% expressed an intention to drive and only 30,4% reaffirmed their will. It was also verified the existence of a significant negative correlation between alcohol consumption and the intention to drive.

In carrying out this study, the Psychology Office concluded that its preventive intervention “may be a fundamental measure in preventing risky road behavior under the influence of TAS above the limit allowed by law.
