Most of the houses that Sociedade Polis Ria Formosa intends to demolish in the core of the Farol of Ilha da Culatra "are legal", as they are "outside the Public Water Domain" and were built at a time when a building permit was not required, claims the Ilha do Residents Association Farol (AMIF).

The islanders refocused on the Farol, this Wednesday, but Polis technicians did not show up, despite the fact that the takeover of some of the houses to be demolished was scheduled for yesterday. But the concentration served, at least, for AMIF president Feliciano Júlio to advance the "novelty" that the houses, in his view, will be in a legal situation.

In statements to the Sul Informação, Feliciano Júlio claimed that the legality of the housing in that housing nucleus was officially decreed «in the Notice No. 56 of 2012 of the Chamber of Faro, signed by Macário Correia", which decreed that "all houses that have been built outside the urban perimeter of Faro, before 1991, are legal, because a building permit was not mandatory' until that date.

This resolution is for the municipal management territory, but not for the Public Water Domain (DPH), which is overseen by other State bodies, in this case the Portuguese Environment Agency, which manages the Polis.

Also in this field, there is a divergence of view among the inhabitants of the Faroleo Sotavento Coastal Waterfront Management Plan (POOC), on which the Polis Ria Formosa Society is based and the demolition process already underway.

The POOC assumes that the entire Ilha da Culatra, except for an area that had already been disaffected a few years ago in the core of the Farol, is found in DPH. But, argues Feliciano Júlio, this only happens in the strips that are «less than 50 meters away, at Preia-mar» from the coastline and the lagoon area. And, he claims, "most of the houses" marked for demolition are in the zone outside those strips.

“We built the houses for over 40 years and no one disputed. It was done in plain sight and there were even people from the Maritime Authority who indicated where people should place the houses. We were never bothered by anyone, except now, by the Polis», argued Feliciano Júlio.

At this time, they were delivered by residents of the Farol, «178 injunctions, 54 relating to first homes and the rest to second homes». In the pipeline, as the Polis notification has not yet arrived, arrangements are made for four more houses.
