panoramic landscape of Dona Ana beachThis Monday, April 13th, the artificial feeding works of Praia da D. Ana, in Lagos, foreseen in the Orla Costeira Development Plan (Burgau -Vilamoura) will start.

The Câmara de Lagos recalls that the beginning of the works dates back to 2009, but they were suspended, as the project needed to be revised and, only now, following the obtaining of the prior approval of the Court of Auditors regarding the contract for the work, the Portuguese Environment Agency informed the Municipality that it is in a position to proceed with the consignment of the work as early as April 13th.

Aimed at protecting the cliffs from erosion caused by the action of the tides, this intervention will have an estimated cost of 1,8 million euros, and it is expected that the use of the beach will be restricted until the 15th of June.

The works will also imply that vehicle access and circulation in that area will be, therefore, temporarily restricted.

After the preparatory actions, the works will begin with the construction of a lateral retention structure between the cliff of the northern limit of Praia da D. Ana and the greater ray of Artilheiros, followed by the filling operation of the beach by pumping about 140 thousand cubic meters of sand.

At the end of this work, the width of the beach at Praia da D. Ana will gain about 40 meters, thus allowing more space for the many tourists who seek it, as well as creating an imperative safety zone along the cliffs.

This intervention is considered by the City Council as «indispensable for the protection of the sea front and the safety of users of this excellent bathing area in the municipality of Lagos».

The Mayor of Lagos and the Regional Director of the Administration of the Hydrographic Region of the Algarve met this Saturday, April 11th, with the owners, managers and administrators of tourist developments (hotels and restaurants) in the area, to give the opportunity to know the purpose of the intervention, the entities responsible for the project and for the execution of the work, as well as the possible impacts of its implementation.

Asserting itself «aware that this work will cause some inconveniences, but convinced that it is absolutely essential for the viability and continuity of Praia da D. Ana as a beach of choice and tourist attraction in Lagos», the Chamber appeals for «understanding and collaboration of all”, and recalls the existence, “nearby, of beaches of similar beauty and which could serve as an alternative”.
