Silves promotes concert, lecture and meeting of Urban Sketchers to celebrate Monuments Day

Silves CathedralGuided tours, recreational and plastic expression activities, a lecture, a classical music concert and the National Meeting of Urban Sketchers Portugal are the activities that integrate the commemorations of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, in Silves, from April 13th to 19th .

The actions are promoted by the Municipality of Silves (CMS) and are based on the theme “knowing, exploring and sharing”, launched by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage in collaboration with ICOMOS Portugal.

The first day of commemorations, April 13, opens with the activity “Journey to the world of monuments” – guided visits to the monuments of the city of Silves: Pelourinho, Portas da Cidade, Municipal Museum of Archeology of Silves (MMAS), Castelo de Silves , Cathedral, Old Bridge.

This action is aimed at students in the 4th year of the first cycle of basic education, 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary of the Municipal School Groups and is repeated on April 15th and 16th.

April 17 will be an Open Day for schools at MMAS and will start with the playful and artistic expression activity “Exploring, knowing and creating”, between 10:00 and 12:00.

Aimed at children aged 5 years and over, the action consists of a visit to explore the cistern well and the Almedina wall, followed by a plastic expression activity to recreate these monuments in different materials (paper, clay, cardboard).

In the afternoon, between 14:00 and 15:00, IPSS, schools and ATL will be able to participate in the playful and educational activity “Once upon a time…at the time of the well” shared story time, where the daily life of the inhabitants of the Muslim Xelb and simultaneously visit and know the places mentioned in the story.

Messines_02“Entre Colunas Torsas” is the name of the initiative that will open the International Day of Monuments and Sites, April 18, with a visit to the Parish Church of SB Messines, by researcher Aurélio Cabrita, author of the most recent book on this exemplary Baroque monument Algarve. The visit starts at 10:00 am and is aimed at the general public.

This morning, there will also be accompanied visits to the Almohad cistern well, one of the five national monuments in the city of Silves, at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 14:00 pm, 15:30 pm and 16:30 pm.

João Vasco Reys will present, through the lecture “O tempo das azenhas – watermills and mills of the river Arade”, a study by him on this theme, where he will present the water mills that worked in that river for decades. The initiative starts at 16 pm, at MMAS, and is aimed at the general public.

In the evening, at 21 pm, it will be time for a classical music concert by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, where works by Beethoven, Wagner and Haydn will be performed, in one of the most significant monuments of the Algarvian Gothic: the Cathedral of Silves.

The schedule closes with the National Meeting of urban sketchers Portugal, on the 18th and 19th of April. April 18th will be dedicated to the design of historical spaces and monuments in the city of Silves, between 10:00 and 18:00, and at night, at 21:00, a round table will be held at MMAS with the motto “Graphic diary and daily design” .

urban sketchersThe following day, between 10 am and 00 pm, the design of historic spaces and monuments will take place in SB Messines. Urban Sketchers is a collective of authors who draw in graphic diaries the cities where they live, the places where they travel. They meet to draw from time to time and respect the manifesto.

All activities have free entry.

The International Day of Monuments and Sites was created by ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites), on April 18, 1982, with the aim of raising public awareness of the diversity and vulnerability of cultural heritage as well as the efforts to protect it, valorization and conservation require.

The themes chosen annually are intended to promote a transversal connection to all realities, whether local, regional, national or international.

In Portugal, the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with ICOMOS Portugal, promotes in 2015 (the year in which ICOMOS celebrates 50 years) the theme “Knowing, Exploring, Sharing”, which translates into the organization of activities that promote citizens' awareness of the need to know the heritage and its potential as a vital resource for harmonious development and recognize it as an irreplaceable legacy.
