The presidents of the Chambers of Faro and Vila Real de Santo António want “reliable information” on the most recent developments in the process of demolishing houses on the barrier islands of Ria Formosa, namely on the real implications of the various precautionary measures that were presented.

For this, they requested, as members of the Sociedade Polis Litoral Ria Formosa, the scheduling of an Extraordinary General Meeting, «as a matter of urgency».

As explained to the Sul Informação Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, the joint request is linked to the many news related to the acceptance of injunctions, by the Court, which prevented the Polis Society from taking possession of houses in the nucleus of the Farol, on Culatra Island, this Monday.

“We want to know what is going on with the renaturalization process that is underway. We know that there are precautionary measures, but we were not informed by the Polis Society about their consequences», said Rogério Bacalhau.

Rogério Bacalhau: “If there's anything we can do [to stop the demolitions], we'll do it”

“We want to know what is at stake, what kind of precautionary measures were presented… basically, to have reliable information about the entire process, so that we can have an opinion and see what can be done”, he summed up.

Despite not hiding that he is against the demolitions on Ilha da Culatra, Rogério Bacalhau does not admit to asking for the suspension of the demolitions, at the meeting to be scheduled. "The situation must be resolved in the courts, which are sovereign, and we have to calmly await their decision," he began by saying, then assuring that "if there is anything we can do [to stop the demolitions], do it we will».

In the joint letter from Rogério Bacalhau and the Vilarrealist mayor Luís Gomes, both from the PSD, it is requested that the agenda include «issues related to the interventions carried out and programmed in the area of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, within the framework of the requalification and enhancement of this natural area».

«On the other hand, this is the time to take stock of the execution and effectiveness of the Vilamoura-Vila Real de Santo António Coastal Development Plan (POOC), considering that it focuses on population centers and sectors of activity that are fundamental for the Algarve's economy and marks, next June, a decade since its publication», defend the two mayors.

Here, Rogério Bacalhau makes no secret of his interest in seeing the POOC review process begin as soon as possible. “We are working to change the statute of the Culatra nucleus and legalize those houses. It cannot continue as it is. But, for that, a set of acts are needed, namely the revision of the POOC», he defended.
