great war monumentgreat war monumentThe Municipality of Tavira announced this week that it is associated with the program “Portugal 1914-1918”, promoted by the Institute of Contemporary History of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with the purpose of sensitizing the general population to the importance of preserving the memory of the First War World.

In this context, the municipality invites Tavirenses, «descendants of soldiers who fought in this conflict, to share photographs, postcards, letters, medals, diaries, maps, recorded testimonies of combatants, a grenade, a survival kit, a uniform, among others. other elements'.

«Any memory is valid, thus contributing to promote the study and dissemination of the history of Portugal's participation in this World War», stresses the municipality.

The “Portugal 1914-1918” program encourages the participation of all citizens to remember and better understand the history of the conflict and its repercussions in our country.

It is intended to remember the soldiers who left, their families and all those who remained and suffered the impact of the war, as well as safeguarding the integrity of the memory of the Portuguese participation in the conflict of 1914-1918, an integral and inseparable part of the national collective identity.

This program consists of three autonomous projects:

>>O portal Portugal 1914-1918, which provides, in free and open access, information and documents on the history of Portugal and the Great War, highlighting the impact of the conflict at the local level;

>>The project Memories of World War I 1914-1918, who intends to know and tell the story of the soldiers who went to war, their paths, their families and all those who stayed behind;

>>Days of Memory Project that results from the collection of testimonies, stories, pieces, photographs, postcards, letters, medals, diaries, maps and documents on the participation of Portuguese in the First World War, carried out in October 2014 at the São Bento Palace .

The conflict represented a defining moment in the contemporary world, whose effects significantly marked the History of Portugal.

Between 1914 and 1918, more than 100.000 Portuguese soldiers went to war, coming from all over the country. They fought in Africa and Flanders, with nearly 8.000 men killed, as many were wounded, 6 were missing and more than 7 were taken prisoner.
