Commemorations Dead Great War Lakes(54)The Câmara de Lagos marked the centenary of World War I on Sunday, with a military ceremony, which took place next to the Monument to the Dead of the Great War, in Praça Luís de Camões.

The occasion also served to unveil a plaque commemorating the one hundred years since the beginning of the War, as well as to place a wreath of flowers and pay "homage to the fallen dead in defense of the Fatherland."

"It is on behalf of all those who have fallen in this bloody war that we are here today", recalled President of the League of Combatants - Núcleo de Lagos, Viegas Gonçalves, who believes that "it will never be too much to remind our Government of the importance of the military for Portugal" .

For the association leader, “it was all these combatants who changed our common future as a country”, so “honoring them today, and always, is the least we can do”.

In addition to the solemn ceremonies, presided over by the Mayor of Lagos Joaquina Matos, the initiative had different cultural moments, by the group Nova Filarmonia from the Academy of Music of Lagos and by Silménia Magalhães, from the Experimental Theater of Lagos, who declaimed a text allusive to this episode in world history.
