Great War Dead MonumentIn the year that marks the Centenary of World War I, the Municipality of Lagos prepared a diversified program of initiatives under the motto “The War for Peace”, which runs until December and includes film sessions, conferences, awareness actions and exhibitions. The celebration of the Centenary, at the national level, starts on Sunday, October 19th.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, 1918, an armistice finally came into effect between the Allies and the Central Powers. Signed six hours earlier in the French Marshal Foch's railway carriage, parked in the Compiègne forest, some 80 kilometers from Paris, it marks the official end of the First World War, after 4 years, 3 months and 9 days of fighting.

The event “The War for Peace” organized by the Municipality of Lagos, through the Municipal Library of Lagos, and by the Lagos Nucleus of the League of Combatants, intends to focus on the idea of Peace and the imperative need for its defense, of “war for her". Hence the intentionality of the date chosen for the beginning of the program – precisely November 11th – the day of the Armistice.

This initiative aims to add civic content, historical memory and a human dimension to the military evocations that will take place in several Portuguese cities, during the month of October 2014.

In Lagos, this Military Evocation takes place on October 19, at Praça Luís de Camões (next to the Monument to the Dead of the Great War), at 11:30 am, and will feature official interventions, deposition of a wreath and unveiling of an evocative plaque of the centenary. The ceremony will be preceded by a cultural event presented by the Academy of Music of Lagos and the Experimental Theater of Lagos.

The program of the “A Guerra pela Paz” initiative, taking place between November 11th and December 13th, will include the presentation of a film cycle at the Centro Cultural de Lagos (“From the Front Line – insane records”); the holding of a cycle of conferences at the Municipal Library of Lagos (“We were the ones”), with the presence of renowned national researchers, and to which the “Memory Days” are associated, (Portuguese and European rescue and construction of memory and identity, national and European).

There will also be the organization of an exhibition structured in two nuclei, a museological and iconographic one – “Memories of the Great War”, on display at the Lagos Regimental Warehouse (photos and pieces provided by the Liga dos Combatentes and the Directorate of Military History and Culture), and a bibliographic center – “The writing of the Great War”, on display at the Municipal Library of Lagos, showing its documentary collection available on this theme.

There are also two types of pedagogical actions aimed at students from the 9th to the 12th grade of schools in the municipality: lectures on the Great War, in November, given by the Lagos Combatants League Nucleus, and exhibition of thematic films, provided by BML, in the months of November and December.
