Mediterranean diet with an Algarve flavor can be tasted in Egypt

cataplana“Cataplana de Pintada with Sweet Potato from Aljezur and Mussel” and “Octopus de Santa Luzia with Xarém de Ameijoa Branca and sautéed spinach” were the two recipes chosen by the Chefs of the SlowMed project to represent Portugal at the International Meeting, which takes place between 26 and October 30, at the Library of Alexandria, Egypt.

The six national teams (Local Working Groups - LWG) of the SlowMed project they will meet for four days to deepen the work being carried out in Portugal, Egypt, Spain, Italy, Palestine and Lebanon and to jointly outline the next stages of international cooperation.

During these days, the dishes that the Portuguese LWG considered the most representative of Mediterranean cuisine in the Algarve will be presented to the participants, in a gastronomic exercise of symbiosis between tradition and innovation.

LWG Português includes four chefs (Adérito Almeida and Abílio Guerreiro, from EHTA, Margarida Vargues and Pedro Beleza, with the advice of chef José Niza, from Tertúlia Algarvia), four filmmakers (Jorge Mestre Simão, from CIAC-UAlg, Fúlvia de Almeida , Ana Medeira and Rodrigo Cartegiano), a nutritionist (Catarina Vasconcelos) and a specialist in communication and food (Susana Rosa).

O SlowMed Project, supported by the program ENPI CBC-MED, aims to enshrine the Mediterranean Diet as a healthy lifestyle and Slow Food as a form of cultural dialogue between Mediterranean peoples.
It aims to encourage the preservation and conservation of the gastronomic, cultural and artistic heritage of the Mediterranean, to promote the recognition of gastronomy as a form of cultural and artistic expression and to bring together the peoples of the Mediterranean and also to stimulate economic, cultural and institutional cooperation in the field of Diet, Culture and Mediterranean Art.

unnamedHowever, on the 13th of October, Monday, they take place in the historic area of Faro the final filming of the video with which the LWG Algarvio will present the region at the Alexandria International Meeting.

This filming culminates an exploratory phase in which a lot of filming, interviews, research and collection of recipes were made, according to the themes “Sea” (during the II Mediterranean Diet Fair in Tavira) and “Terra” during the event “TocA'Andar” in Serra do Caldeirão, where the LWG also organized a Mediterranean Diet Cooking Show.

The International Festival of the Mediterranean Diet, taking place in Alexandria, Egypt, has more than 80 guests from Italy, Egypt, Spain, Lebanon, Palestine and Portugal.

Among these guests are chefs of international merit for the Jury of the International Fusion Dishes Competition, 24 Chefs from the LWG, Portuguese gastronomic consultants, film directors of International merit, for the Jury of the International Documentary Competition on the Mediterranean Diet, 24 LWG filmmakers, six Dietitians, six experts in food and communication, 14 LWG and project coordinators and other national and international personalities.

Over the four days of the Meeting, there will be gastronomy exhibitions from Italy, Egypt, Spain, Lebanon, Palestine and Portugal, Cooking International classes on fusion cuisine in these countries, an International Seminar on the Mediterranean Diet, a concert of Portuguese music, an International Fusion Dishes competition around the Mediterranean Diet, an International Documentary Competition on the Mediterranean Diet, an international Mediterranean Diet Dinner, the presentation of the Mediterranean Diet Cookbook for children, and an International Nutrition Workshop and Mediterranean Diet.
