The Association of Municipalities Terras do Infante, which includes Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo, distributed a new cartographic kit to each of the Municipal Civil Protection Services and the Voluntary Fire Brigade. The objective is to provide these entities with a cartography to support firefighting.
This kit includes a new base cartography, but also the use of new IT equipment, namely tablets, with all its potential for GPS georeferencing, data communication, distance measurements and automated areas.
The system also has the ability to update basic data, namely the road network, water points, fuel management lanes and other data that may be considered necessary, which the paper format would hardly support.
The first version of this cartographic kit was created in 2009. It was a cartography to support firefighting, based on military topographic maps and orthophotomaps from 2005.
This cartography also contained printed, on those cartographic bases, the elements available at the time, considered as key pieces in the delineation of fire-fighting strategies, such as the standardized road network, water points classified according to their accessibility to land environments and aerial, fuel management lanes that were executed, the parking places of the forest sapper teams, among others.
However, this cartographic kit, in paper format, was already quite out of date – the orthophotomaps contained there are already about 10 years old – and its handling was not expeditious enough, so Associação Terras do Infante decided to update it and adapt it to new technological means.
The municipalities of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo thus serve as a center for testing and developing these cartographic kits, which may later be adopted, in a standardized manner, by the other municipalities in the district.
