contract“Mexilhoeira Grande – Our culture goes out into the street!” is the activity that will take place, on September 27, from 15:00 pm to 22:00 pm, in the Churchyard of the Igreja Matriz and in the streets of that parish, to mark, in a very special way, the European Heritage Days in Portimão.

The days begin on September 26, with the presentation of part of the Mosaic of the Villa Romana da Abicada.

After the survey and packaging work carried out in 2011, the mosaics were under the custody of the Portimão Museum, and restoration was subsequently started, as part of a collaboration project with the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

On September 26, one of the restored parts will be incorporated in the exhibition on display at the Museum, “The Mediterranean so close”.

For the 27th of September, a program was prepared that had the full involvement of the Parish Council of Mexilhoeira Grande and its community, which actively made themselves available to support the initiative in every way possible.

On this day, from 15 pm, it will be possible to walk, with a guide, through the streets of the parish and discover its history, passing by the barber, the shoemaker, the Misericórdia and the Igreja Matriz.

You will have the opportunity to get to know the arts, knowledge and taste the flavors that for decades were part of the lives of different generations, and that still exist in this parish today. Milling and bread, construction, wicker, cork, atabua, lace, herbs and mezinhas, sweets, arbutus, honey, wine, cheese, biscuits, are some examples of the activities and products you will find.

mosaic Roman villa of AbicadaThere will also be an area dedicated to the archaeological, built, natural and immaterial ethnographic heritage of the parish, which will include an exhibition by the Museum of Portimão and the Parish Council of Mexilhoeira.

The proposal is to go back in time and participate in activities, workshops on mud and adobe constructions, paintings with natural pigments and lime, introduction to archeology, paper mills, environmental games, squares with history and ceramics.

Traditional games will not be forgotten either, and there will be no shortage of tops, marbles, mesh, rope, caps, monkeys, the donkey and five stones games, among others, which can be played by everyone.

At 16 pm, there will be a performance by the Rancho Folclorico da Figueira and at 00 pm by the accordionists Lígia and Belinha, Dinis and Filipe.

In this time traveling, other memories will also be evoked, such as the animations and parties that brought together the rural community, where fun was joined to work.

On September 28, the program prepared by the Portimão Museum proposes a trip to the megalithic monuments of Alcalar, where, between 10:00 am and 13:00 pm, visitors will be able to take a short journey through prehistory, through guided visits and participation in the hunting ateliers, schist slabs and ornaments, stone carving and monolithic transport.

During the three days, 26, 27 and 28 September, the Museum of Portimão will be associated with the European Heritage Days and will have free entry. Opening hours are from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm.

The European Heritage Days, in Portimão, are organized by the Municipality of Portimão, Museum and Parish Council of Mexilhoeira Grande, and have the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.
