martin magellanFrederico 'Martim' Magalhães was the runner-up under-18 in the 5th Stage of the 2014 National Surf Circuit, held at Praia do Amado (Aljezur), on the 6th and 7th of September.

The Clube Naval de Portimão surfer achieved, in the Algarve, his best result on the circuit and regained the chance to finish the season in the Portuguese Top 8. The competition was organized by the Portuguese Surfing Federation (FPS) and by the Algarve Surf Clube, with the sponsorship of Volcom.

Praia do Amado received the national stage of Esperanças in good weather, in contrast to the rest of the country. The sea presented itself with a slow period, almost without wind, but small, except in some periods of flooding in the morning, with 'sets' ' more generous, who didn't make it to the finals.

The stage was disputed by close to 130 athletes, among which the best nationals and 13 from Algarve, in the categories Under-12, Under-14, Under-16, Under-18 and Under-18 Women.

'Martim' Magalhães produced a safe surf and showed more tactical maturity, performing a high level U-18 final, with good positioning and accurate markings.

The elite FPS surfer, part of the Junior National Team, 'grabbed' the 2nd place with the second best wave in the final (grade 5.95) and concluded the heat needing a 5,01 grade to 'steal' the victory from Guilherme Fonseca .

“Almost”, commented 'Martim' Magalhães, visibly happy, after a weekend that began with the victory, in the Junior category, at Rumblefish@Amado, the first European event on the world circuit Volcom Totally Crustaceous Tour 14-15, played at Praia do Amado, on Friday 5th September. (see link below)

The Algarve was represented by two more surfers in the Under-18 category of the national Esperança no Amado. Francisco Duarte (Clube Naval de Portimão), also an elite FPS surfer, reached the semi-finals and was eliminated in 3rd, needing a 4.16 mark to qualify for the final.

Francisco Duarte finished the stage in 5th place Under-18. José Montez (Clube Naval de Portimão) competed in the battery of 'trials' and lost in 4th, with a performance far below what he has already shown to be capable of.

In the Under-18 Women, the early elimination of the two Algarve entered the competition caused some surprise. Yolanda Hopkins (Clube Naval de Portimão) and Inês Pascoal (CBAVAL – Almancil Vertical Grouping Badminton Club) lost, respectively, in 3rd and 4th, in the same heat of the women's quarter-finals.

Yolanda was coming from a semi-final in Liga Moche and was a natural candidate to repeat qualification at Esperanças. Inês is still recovering from a broken foot and shows a lack of competitive rhythm. It is also true that the Algarve lost to Teresa Bonvalot (who is already the 2014 national champion) and to Mariana Garcia, 1st and 2nd classified in the stage.

In the U-16s, António Silveira (Algarve Surf Clube), overcame Round 1 and ended up being eliminated in 3rd in the following round (quarter-finals), in a heat won by surfer João Moreira, who would eventually win the stage. Francisco Bívar (Clube Naval de Portimão) was eliminated in the first U-16 round.

In the Under-14 category, Bruno Gregório (Algarve Surf Clube) reached the quarter-finals, being eliminated in 3rd. Ricardo Augusto (Algarve Surf Clube) also advanced to the quarter-finals, but was late for the heat (the first of Sunday's journey) and was eliminated in 4th, practically without making waves.

Michael Conlan (CBAVAL) was also part of the group of 5 from the Algarve in the Sub-14 group. The surfer from Vilamoura lost right away in Round 1, as did Henrique Pequenochinho, from Portimão Surf Clube.

Miguel Raposo (Iate Clube Marina de Portimão) was also eliminated in the first U-14 round, still on Saturday, the first day of the race.

This category was won by Guilherme Ribeiro, from Costa de Caparica, who was almost guaranteed the U-14 national title and also played in the U-12 final at Amado. Remember that Guilherme Ribeiro is two-time U-12 and U-14 champion of the Algarve Surf Circuit (2013 and 2014).

The Under-12 category had only one Algarvean in competition at Amado: João Maria Mendonça, surfer from Arrifana, who won his heat in the first round and ended up being eliminated in 4th in the following phase (quarter-finals).

The U-12 stage was won by Afonso Antunes, from Costa de Caparica, who was very strong at Amado, even achieving – in his U-12 semi-final – the highest score of the entire championship (17.00 | 9+ 8).
