bobcat_2LPN signed the National Pact for the Conservation of the Iberian Lynx, reinforcing its «continued commitment to this issue, and hoping that this initiative will boost the recovery of the species and its habitats in Portugal», announced the association.

The National Pact for the Conservation of the Iberian Lynx was publicly launched yesterday, within the scope of the Action Plan for the Conservation of the Iberian Lynx in Portugal (PACLIP).

The LPN – League for the Protection of Nature is pleased with the signing of this document, which it considers to represent “an important commitment of Portuguese society towards the recovery of this feline critically in danger of extinction”.

The National Pact for the Conservation of the Iberian Lynx was drawn up within the scope of the Executive Committee of PACLIP, having brought together contributions and concerns from the different entities that comprise it, such as representatives of the agricultural, forestry and hunting sectors, the Academy, the Public Administration and the Non-Governmental Environmental Organizations (ONGA).

LPN, one of the representatives of the NGOs on this Committee, actively participated in the drafting of this Pact and considers that its approval and signature constitutes «another important step in the conservation of the Iberian lynx in Portugal, by bringing together a very wide range of entities in support of to this cause'.

This Pact establishes the objectives and commitments in the context of the conservation of the Iberian lynx, including a stable and transparent procedural framework, with a view to consolidating the involvement of all those involved in this process, in particular those involved in the agricultural and forestry sectors. and hunting.

The conservation of the Iberian lynx has been a topic to which LPN has been devoting special attention for many years, since the end of the 70s with the national campaign “Salvemos o Lince ea Serra da Malcata”, and currently through the Lince Program, created in 2004 to contribute to the preservation of this species and its habitats in Portugal, under which it has developed several projects and activities in the last decade.

«We believe that the Pact now launched demonstrates the importance of the involvement of different sectors and sensibilities in the conservation of the Iberian lynx, representing an opportunity to further promote the desirable collaboration between all those involved in the management of the rural territory that serves as a habitat for this species . Furthermore, it is a unique opportunity to unite all of society around the conservation of the Iberian lynx, and any citizen or entity can subscribe to this Pact», explains the LPN.

With its signature, the League reaffirms its commitment to the conservation of the Iberian lynx, «applying to all those who, individually or collectively, support the conservation of this species, to subscribe and publicize the National Pact for the Conservation of the Iberian Lynx. The support and recognition of Portuguese society for the conservation efforts of this species is essential for its recovery in the national territory and could be the necessary impetus for us to soon have stable populations of this globally threatened feline in Portugal».
