The Municipality of Monchique intends to grant a subsidy of 5 thousand euros to young people who live in the municipality or who want to settle there, to recover their homes, to which are added benefits at the level of municipal fees and tariffs and other perks. This support is intended for young or young couples with an adult age below 35 years (individual or the average of the couple).

The draft Regulation for the Attribution of Support in the Scope of the Recovery and Acquisition of Housing for Young People and Young Couples, proposed by the municipality's president Rui André, was approved this Tuesday, at a Monchique Chamber Meeting.

In addition to monetary support for «self-construction, reconstruction, conservation, improvement or restoration of own housing», there is «a wide range of exemptions from Municipal Fees and Tariffs present in other Regulations, as well as the offer of projects and technical support».

"This proposal comes within the scope and following of an important strategic commitment of the Municipality of Monchique, already advocated in some strategic documents such as Agenda 21 of Monchique, which foresees the application of measures to combat human desertification and population aging", revealed the Monchique municipality.

In all existing demographic studies, namely the Censuses, there has been a decrease in the population residing in the territory of the Municipality of Monchique in recent decades. The same studies have indicated an aging population and a low birth rate, "a situation that has deserved great attention and concrete measures by this Executive."

“Another of the reasons that was at the base and in the decision of this proposal, is related to the fact that there is the degradation of some buildings in the urban centers, an urban heritage that must be preserved and conserved”, adds the municipality.

“With this approval, another promise in our Electoral Program is fulfilled, with a special focus on young and young couples, not only for residents but also for those who the challenge of their lives can pass through life in the mountains and in the countryside, a real movement of fixation in search of quality of life and a few minutes from the urban centers of the coast», considered Rui André.

For the mayor of Loulé, "this type of initiative is a commitment to policies aimed at keeping and captivating more young people that guarantee and prevent the human desertification that we have been witnessing in recent decades."

“We could not remain indifferent and not approve and propose measures that encourage the settlement and bring new inhabitants to this territory. The measures that we have proposed are an example of our concern in this matter, which is essential for the socio-economic development of this municipality. We now add another factor of interest and motivation for this to happen», he considered.

«Also, there is a latent concern with the municipality's urban centers, where some houses are already appearing that show an evident state of degradation. This project did not leave out this concern with an urban heritage that needs several interventions so that future generations can enjoy it, but above all, that they inhabit it, enriching the growth of children and young people in a community context that is so important for the construction of values and friendship relations», added Rui André.
